Is Givenchy Safe in the Hands of Sarah Burton?

By Gabriella Amorosi

It’s 6pm on a Wednesday, and instead of unloading the dishwasher, I’m daydreaming about owning the Givenchy “Small P'tit Voyou bag in patent leather.” You know the one—it’s sleek, it’s chic, it’s the kind of bag that makes you feel like you’ve got your life together, even when you most definitely do not. Honestly, if I won the lottery today, that bag would be the first thing I’d snatch up.

But just as I was lost in my fantasy shopping spree, the fashion world  dropped a bombshell: Sarah Burton, after 26 years at Alexander McQueen, has been named Creative Director at Givenchy. Cue the internal panic. Will this new direction change the Givenchy I know and love? The timeless elegance, the Parisian flair, the effortless sophistication—are they safe in the hands of someone new? Or are we about to see Givenchy get a whole new attitude?

For those not yet acquainted with the allure of Givenchy, let me paint you a picture. Imagine Paris in 1952—Hubert de Givenchy, just 24 years old, starts his own fashion house. This wasn’t just any new brand; it was the embodiment of high-class femininity, a whisper of sophistication in a world that often screams for attention. Givenchy has always been synonymous with dressing the most influential women, past and present. Audrey Hepburn, for instance, was a frequent muse for the brand, and her wardrobe showcased Givenchy’s signature high-class elegance and eternal glamour. Flashback to Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Audrey Hepburn, draped in that little black dress. Not just any dress, but the Givenchy dress—the one that set the gold standard for timeless elegance.

Side note, here’s a fashion tip that never fails: a little black dress, black heels, and a sprinkle of pearls. It’s my go-to for any event when I’m paralyzed by indecision. It’s like having a foolproof charm in your closet—simple, chic, and eternally fabulous. So next time you’re in a sartorial crisis, channel your inner Audrey and remember: classic never goes out of style.

Speaking of never going out of style, let’s circle back to Givenchy. I tumbled down a fashion rabbit hole, and what I discovered about Sarah Burton left me swooning. Here’s some images of her past design work at  Alexander McQueen:

There’s something incredibly personal about her designs—like she’s pouring her very soul into each piece. It’s not just fashion; it’s a love letter to craftsmanship and detail. And now that she’s stepping into the role of Creative Director at Givenchy, I’m all in.

Here’s why I think Burton is the perfect match for Givenchy: there’s this magical synergy between her style and the brand’s legacy. Burton’s work feels like a natural, gorgeous extension of Givenchy and the brand as a whole. I can’t wait to see how she’ll weave her own unique charm into the Givenchy tapestry. This feels like the start of a thrilling new chapter in a story, and honestly, I’m here for every twist and turn.
