How to Always Look Put Together Even When You Don’t Feel It

By: Olivia Kittleman

Some days, you just don’t have the energy to put effort into your appearance—but that doesn’t mean you have to look like it. I tend to open the Pinterest app whenever I have no idea what to wear and am not feeling my best. With seven simple tricks, you can create an effortlessly polished look even when you’re running late or just not feeling your best. Here’s how:

1. Master a Go-To Outfit Formula

Having a few outfit combinations in your wardrobe eliminates decision fatigue. Stick to a reliable formula like: • Blazer + Basic Tee + Jeans + Loafers

• Wide-leg sweatpants + Basic Tee + Cardigan

• Oversized Sweater + Jeans + Boots

• Monochrome Outfit + Statement Accessories

A well-fitting, neutral-toned base makes you look polished with minimal effort.

2. Prioritize Grooming Over Makeup

When you don’t feel like doing a full face of makeup, focus on grooming instead:

• Brush and style your hair (a slick back bun or heatless curls always works)

• Keep your eyebrows shaped and brushed

• Moisturize and use lip balm for a fresh look

A neat, natural appearance often looks more put-together than a rushed makeup look.

3. Stick to a Minimalist Makeup Routine

If you only have five minutes, this is my go-to makeup routine:

• Tinted moisturizer/sunscreen or concealer

• Mascara for a wide-awake look, or just curl your lashes

• Cream/liquid blush for a natural flush

• Lip gloss or balm to add polish

These simple steps create an effortless yet put-together vibe.

4. Invest in Elevated Basics

The key to looking put together without effort is having high-quality basics:

• A structured coat or blazer

• A classic white button-down

• Well-fitted jeans or tailored trousers

• Basic black, grey, and white t-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, and sweaters

A simple T-shirt and jeans look intentional if the pieces are well-made.

5. Accessories Make the Difference

If your outfit feels basic, accessories can make all the difference:

• Hoop earrings add instant sophistication (if they’re chunky, even better)

• Layering necklaces makes it look like you spent time on your outfit even if you didn’t

• A structured handbag makes you look more polished

• Blue light glasses can hide tired eyes and add to any outfit Little details can elevate even the most casual outfit. I always try to make sure I have one fun thing going on with my outfits.

Whether it’s a fun shoe, lots of jewelry, a fun bag, a unique jacket, or blue light glasses, I will always feel more put together and feel more confident with my outfit.

6. Stick to a Signature Scent

A great perfume makes you feel put together even if you’re in sweatpants. Find a signature scent that boosts your confidence and apply it before heading out the door on pulse points to make sure it lasts all day or use an oil-based perfume.

7. Confidence is Key

Even if you’re not feeling your best, carrying yourself with confidence makes all the difference. Good posture, a smile, and a positive attitude can make any outfit look intentional. By following these simple steps, you can maintain a put-together appearance no matter how you feel. Looking polished is all about strategic choices, not endless effort.
