Latest fashion trends are showcased at high-profile events such as fashion and awards shows. When celebrities post their custom and unique looks, fashion can sometimes go in a different direction. This can cause audiences to think about what their stylists were trying to portray, especially since the choices can heavily influence what becomes popular. For example, in 2010, Lady Gaga wore a dress to the MTV Awards, made entirely out of raw beef. It got fans questioning the image she wanted to display. The dress was a custom piece by designer Franc Fernandez. What’s interesting is that her dress was a political statement, rather than an attention-grabbing outfit; almost performance art. This left feeds full of offensive comments, as people took this look from a different perspective.
Fashion brands create clothing lines and capsule collections, frequently collaborating with fashion brands. With multiple collaborations, the industry leverages the power over a certain celebrity to promote and sell fashion items. Sometimes these collaborations are endorsed through advertisements. Their association with a particular brand can significantly develop its visibility and credibility. Additionally, paparazzi and fashion photographers capture celebrities' casual street style, which is often featured in magazines, blogs, and social media. Like Selena Gomez, for example, straight out of the airport, she would make comfy clothes the trend. She added accessories, making the look more dressed up and ‘wearable’ for the public. Fans often emulate styles, contributing to the popularity of certain trends. Their admiration for certain celebrities can lead them to become cultural icons because of their unique styles. Their fashion choices shape cultural trends and what is considered fashion.
